Experiments in Failure

Risk, Experimentation, and Creativity

Rachel Parish, performance-maker and Artistic Director of Firehouse Creative Productions, presented Experiments in Failure, an exploration of how to use an arts-led approach to create safe spaces to fail in interdisciplinary practices. Drawing from her background creating socially engaged interactive performances with storygathering at their core, Rachel’s Experiments in Failure is part workshop and part performance lecture. During the course of the lunch talk, Rachel wove together historical and contemporary explorations of failure in the arts with personal and professional stories from the field of contemporary performance making. Recent projects she will discussed included developing an arts-based empathy-building course with members of the NYPD Hostage Negotiation team and creating a new play entitled Superjohn in collaboration with the Pediatric Oncology unit at the Whittington Hospital in London, UK.
