Shadows of Maoism
With Xi Lian and Orin Starn
Mao Zedong ranks among the world’s most influential figures of the past century, a pop icon in the West and the founder of the Communist Chinese state. Yet the more disturbing aspects of Mao’s rule and thought have drawn more attention in recent years. This lunchtime conversation between Divinity School Professor Xi Lian, the author of the recent book Blood Letters about the Cultural Revolution-era dissident Lin Zhao, and anthropologist Orin Starn, whose new coauthored The Shining Path tells the story of a Peruvian Maoist movement, will explore Mao’s legacy in China and around the world.
This event is free and open to the public. Light lunch provided. Co-sponsored by the Department of Cultural Anthropology and the Duke Divinity School.
