Ruiz within Ruiz - Reconstructing La Telenovela Errante

Ruiz within Ruiz: Reconstructing La Telenovela Errante

with Chamila Rodríguez and Roberto Brodsky

While teaching at Duke in the mid-1990s, legendary Chilean filmmaker Raúl Ruiz gifted to the university’s special collections library (now the Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library) 166 reels of moving image prints, soundtracks, and negatives from 19 of his productions. One of these, La Telenovela Errante, remained unfinished upon Ruiz’s death in 2011. In 2016, a group of Chilean filmmakers set out to reconstruct the film, and partnered with the Rubenstein Library with the goal of bringing La Telenovela Errante to life.  Actress and filmmaker Chamila Rodríguez and novelist and Chilean Cultural Attaché Roberto Brodsky will discuss the legacy of Raúl Ruiz and the continued life of his films. The films of Raúl Ruiz were the subject of a retrospective at Lincoln Center in New York in January of this year, prompting this exploration by Adam Thirlwell in the New York Review of Books (January 5, 2017): Raúl Ruiz: From One World to the Next.

Free and open to the public. Light lunch served. Conducted in Spanish with simultaneous translation available.
