Making a Home for Black Southern Film
Tyra Dixon in Conversation with Joseph Winters
Tyra Dixon is a writer, editor, producer, director, photographer, videographer, and business owner. After serving in 2023 as co-director, alongside Lana Garland, of the Hayti Heritage Film Fesitval, Tyra is now director of the festival.
Tyra Dixon will be in conversation with Duke University professor Joseph Winters (Religious Studies and African and African American Studies) about the power of Black film - and especially Black Southern film - to preserve wisdom, celebrate creativity, subvert expectations, and transform futures.
The Hayti Heritage Film Festival is held yearly during the first week in March, and is one of the nation's longest-running Black film festivals. The festival features screenings of documentaries and short and feature-length films, with a particular focus on the US South.
This is the third in a series featuring conversations with people who are bringing the ideas and values of the humanities into work beyond university borders.
