Imani Winds at NorthStar Church of the Arts

Imani Winds, the GRAMMY-nominated, NY-based wind quintet renowned for its virtuosity and record of commissioning bold new works by composers of color, leads a “Sunday Service” at North Star Church of the Arts in downtown Durham. On the heels of their Saturday, November 16 performance of french hornist and composer Jeff Scott’s Passion for Bach and Coltrane, the quintet will give a lecture/demonstration about the musical and cultural conversations at work in the piece — bridging classical and jazz, sacred and secular. In 2019/2020, Imani Winds embarks on a two-year residency at Duke, with a pair of culminating public performances: Passion for Bach and Coltrane on Saturday, November 16 and Revolutionary aka the Civil Rights Project on Saturday, March 21.

Free and open to the public. Coffee and pastries provided for all attendees. Arts & Context is co-sponsored by the Forum for Scholars and Publics at Duke University, The Pinhook, North Star, and Pie Pushers. The Imani Winds residency is made possible, in part, with support from the Department of Music & the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University.
