Grounded storytelling and newspaper reporting

Professor Javier Wallace in conversation with The News & Observer Reporter Andrew Carter

Join us for a conversation between Duke professor Javier Wallace and The News & Observer reporter Andrew Carter exploring why news matters. More than a source of politics and scandal, newspapers have long provided connections between readers and their communities. Family scrapbooks and boxes of important documents are filled with clippings of high school sports heroics and heartbreak, chronicles of professional successes, weddings, deaths, births, school happenings, church suppers - the stories of lives lived in community.

If you're an ACC sports fan or a follower of statewide news in North Carolina, you've no doubt read many of Andrew Carter's stories in The News & Observer. Carter has covered sports at all levels in every corner of the state and has also reported some of the most compelling stories of the aftermath of hurricanes Florence and Helene. He spends time in the communities he covers, capturing the rhythms and flows of speech and silence, waking and working, celebrating and grieving.

In conversation with Andrew Carter is Professor Javier Wallace. Professor Wallace, a former college athlete who now leads research projects on the history of race and sports at Duke, is also a gifted storyteller who believes in the power of community.

This is part of an ongoing series featuring conversations with people who are bringing the ideas and values of the humanities into work beyond university borders.

Light dinner/snacks will be provided.

Registration is not required, but we'll be grateful if you let us know you're planning to attend!
