Connecting Duke and Local Francophone Communities

In 2013, Duke University professor Deb Reisinger created a Service Learning course that combined the study of global displacement with French-language learning and community engagement. Students partnered with CWS, a resettlement agency in Durham that connected them with Central African refugees who had been in the US from two weeks to two years. As students learned about the challenges of adapting to life in a new country and in a new language, they worked with their partners to identify knowledge gaps and immediate needs. The DukeHELLO project is the result of this partnership. Join us for a conversation about community-based language learning and refugees’ stories with local refugees, students, and project leaders.
