Always Looking: Titus Brooks Heagins

A documentary Film Screening and conversation

Join us for a screening of Always Looking (56m, 46s), Chapel Hill-based filmmaker Olympia Stone's documentary film about artist Titus Brooks Heagins, Duke alumnus (Trinity '89) and frequent contributor to arts and community-centered programs locally, regionally, and globally. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Stone and Heagins, including time for Q & A.

From the filmmaker's description: This documentary explores the work of photographer Titus Brooks Heagins and the challenging questions his photos pose about the systemic neglect of society’s most vulnerable communities of color. Humanizing yet confrontational, Titus’s photographs document the overlooked: people who, through some intersection of poverty, race or gender/sexual identity, exist as outsiders.

The film dives into Titus' world, shedding light on the strength it takes to be a marginalized Black photographer capturing the lives of other marginalized folks.

Always Looking also probes the question, “Who can tell whose story?” while directing a spotlight on an overlooked, but richly deserving, artist.

A light reception will follow the screening and conversation.

This event is hosted by the Forum @ FHI, with co-sponsorship by the Center for Documentary Studies and the MFA|EDA Program at Duke.

Information about parking and entering the building, much of which can also be found here. We apologize in advance that parking might feel challenging, and we hope this guidance might help a little. Note that the South side of the building is the one closer to Chapel Hill Street. The North side is the side closer to the railroad tracks.

  • If you have a pass to park anywhere on Duke's campus, we request that you park in one of the gated lots on the South side of Smith Warehouse. Your use of those spaces will free visitor parking and non-gated spaces for our visitors who don't have access to a pass.
  • If you need accessible parking, there are a few spaces adjacent to Smith Warehouse outside Bay 4 and Bay 2. Ramp access is through Bay 6.
  • The closest designated visitor parking is in the metered lot which is at the corner of Buchanan Blvd and Maxwell Ave (the designation for the road that runs along the south side of the building, connecting Buchanan Blvd with Campus Drive). These meters are active 24/7, and the rate is $2/hr. Payment is through Duke Blue Spot. There is a scannable QR code on a sign at the entrance to the lot.
  • Free visitor parking is across Buchanan Blvd. The easiest way to prepare to use one of those lots is to consult the map and locate the blue circled areas to the east and northeast of the building. (Thanks to DHRC @ FHI for compiling this info on their website.)
  • We have requested that the Bay 4 doors on the South side, which normally lock automatically at 5:30 pm, remain unlocked for our event. We hope this is the case! However, if you arrive and the Bay 4 South doors are locked, the door at Bay 6 will be open. (If you have a Duke Card, you should be able to swipe into the building at any locked door.) If you enter through Bay 6, take an immediate right and walk until you reach Bay 4. The lecture hall will be the center space to your left.
