Sandra Gutierrez
In a career that spans more than two decades, Sandra Gutierrez, food writer, cookbook author, and professional cooking instructor, has taught thousands how to cook. Born in the USA, this bilingual, award-winning author of four cookbooks is considered one of the top national experts on Latin American and Southern Regional cuisines.
She is the former food editor for The Cary News and her articles and recipes have been featured in many national and international publications, including The Washington Post, USA Today, NBC Latino, FOX Latino, People Español, Cosmopolitan, In-Style magazine, Men’s Fitness, Cooking Light, The Oxford American, and in newspapers across the country. She is the author of four books: The New Southern-Latino Table: Recipes that Bring Together the Bold and Beloved Flavors of Latin America & The American South; Latin American Street Food: The Best Flavors of Markets, Beaches, and Roadside Stands from Mexico to Argentina; Empanadas: the Hand-Held Pies of Latin America; and Beans and Field Peas: A Savor the South Cookbook. Her books have won her special recognition from The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and the Wall Street Journal.
An accomplished journalist, she has interviewed the likes of Emeril Lagasse, Sara Moulton, and Alton Brown. Her work has appeared in dozens of newspapers nationwide as well as in international publications. As a recipe tester and developer, Sandra has had over 3,000 original recipes and over 1,500 articles published. She served as Chef Ambassador to Roland American Foods. As one of the most sought-after culinary instructors nationwide, Sandra has taught at various cooking schools, including at the Miami Culinary Institute, Lake Austin Spa, Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, Atlanta Cook’s Warehouse, and Southern Season. She is a chef-instructor for Craftsy, and a recipe developer for companies such as Peach Dish and for The National Pork Board.
Sandra is a frequent speaker at conferences, literary festivals, and in museums, including The Smithsonian Museum of American History, The Anacostia Community Museum (Smithsonian Institute), the NC Museum of History (Raleigh), and The Levine Museum of the New South (Charlotte). She has appeared in numerous television shows, including an appearance in the nationally syndicated Daytime TV show on NBC. Her first book was part of an exhibit in the Smithsonian Museum (2016-2018) and she has another exhibit in the works. Sandra is a founding member of the NC Chapter of Les Dames D’Escoffier. Her awards include the M.F.K Fisher Grand Prize Award for Excellence in Food Writing.
