Nancy MacLean

Nancy MacLean is the William H. Chafe Professor of History and Public Policy at Duke. An award-winning scholar, MacLean is the author of five books, including Behind the Mask of Chivalry (a New York Times “noteworthy” book of the year), Freedom is Not Enough, described as “contemporary history at its best” by the Chicago Tribune, and Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America, a finalist for the National Book Award in Nonfiction, and winner of the LA Times Book Prize in Current Interest, the Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Award, and the Lillian Smith Book Award. In 2010, MacLean was elected a fellow of the Society of American Historians. She is also an award-winning teacher and offers courses on 20th-century America, social movements, and public policy history at Duke University.
