Witness to War
A Conversation with Lurgio Gavilán
Lurgio Gavilán was a child soldier who fought in Peru’s Shining Path revolutionary movement and then the Peruvian army. He is the author of the acclaimed new memoir When Rains Became Floods: A Child Soldier’s Story (Duke University Press, 2015) about his journey as a Quechua Indian village boy through the war years. We will also be joined via Skype by Mikael Wikström, the director of Storm in the Andes, a new documentary about the war and memory in Peru, and the film’s main character, Josefin Ekerman. The film will screen that night at 7 pm at White Auditorium on Duke’s East Campus as part of the Latin American and Caribbean Film Festival.
Co-sponsored by the Forum for Scholars and Publics, Franklin Humanities Institute, Department of Cultural Anthropology, Spanish Language Program, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Center for Global Studies and the Humanities.
