Accomplished feature writer and English professor Carlo Rotella invites us into the minds of a group of skeptical first-year students who are ultimately transformed by a required literature class

Join us for a discussion between Florence Dore (UNC-CH) and Carlo Rotella about Rotella’s latest book, What Can I Get Out of This?: Teaching and Learning in a Classroom Full of Skeptics.

In this book, Rotella, a professor at Boston College, provides an invaluable guide to how to build and sustain community in the modern humanities classroom. Sharing insights from the perspectives of a professor and his students, Rotella offers an honest and empathetic look inside patterns of student engagement and participation in the classroom and a hope-filled analysis of the possibilities for the study of literature to transform students’ lives.

This program is co-sponsored by the UNC-CH Department of English and Comparative Literature, The Writing Program, the Department of American Studies, and the Office of the Provost, along with Duke’s Forum for Scholars and Publics at the Franklin Humanities Institute and the Office of the Dean of Humanities and the Arts.

More information on the event page on the Flyleaf Books website.

Please note that this event is at Flyleaf Books! We will also host a lunchtime discussion for students at Duke on October 30. If you are an interested student, please contact us for more information.
