Día de los Muertos
9th Annual Durham School of the Arts’ Fall Art Festival
We're excited to help sponsor the 9th Annual Fall Arts Festival organized by Durham School of the Arts (DSA). The festival kicks off Saturday, October 24th, for a week of virtual workshops and concerts. Follow along and join in via Instagram @dsa_faf.
Schedule of Events
Virtual Quilting Workshop
Saturday, October 24 | 3 pm
For centuries, people have been creating and preserving legacies through the art of quilting and textiles. In this virtual quilting workshop, dive into the rich history of creative storytelling and review the basics of hand sewing. DSA will mail you the necessary needles, thread, instructions, and patterns to be able to participate in the workshop. We encourage you to use fabric found in your household, such as bed linens, tablecloths, old shirts, etc., that contributes to the telling of your story.
#ourlegacyproject
Ongoing through the month of October
The Durham School of the Arts’ Fall Art Festival: Día de los Muertos presents the 3rd installment of #ourlegacyproject — a dedication to create online space to the remembrance of loved ones who have passed. In honor of these loved ones, DSA will be posting photos and stories all throughout October on the Festival's Instagram page (@dsa_faf). DSA invites you to fill out the Google form to honor a loved one of your own.
Papel Picado Memorial
October 31 - November 6, 2020
With the cancellation of so many in-person celebrations and events, DSA students felt it was important to continue to provide a safe space for the community to celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. This year, a memorial with the photos of student-chosen figures, specifically those in Latinx activism, will be hung to view along the DSA Middle School lawn from October 31st to November 6th.
Instagram Concerts
Saturday, October 24 | 2 pm
Friday, October 30 | 8 pm
Concerts have always been a main part of the Fall Arts Festival. They have traditionally highlighted the talents of DSA students and have exposed the school community to numerous Latinx artists in the surrounding area. The virtual events this year strive to do the same, but on a smaller and more intimate scale. Attend on Instagram @dsa_faf.
Seed Harvest
Fall - Winter 2020/21
Durham School of the Arts is currently accepting seed donations for their spring gardening workshop. They would like to focus on plants and flowers that attract pollinators, specifically the Monarch butterfly for its significance in migration through Durham and Mexico, and its significance in Día de los Muertos. DSA will host various gardening workshops in the spring, including sending seeds to community members who want to participate.
