Nnenna Freelon
Nnenna Freelon is an American jazz singer, composer, producer, and arranger. She has been nominated for six GRAMMY Awards for her vocal work, and has performed and toured with Ray Charles, Ellis Marsalis, Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall, Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, and Terence Blanchard, among other luminaries.
In addition to her extensive recording and touring career, Freelon has dedicated herself to educating young people. She toured the United States for four years as the National Spokesperson for Partners In Education. Nnenna also took part in a ground-breaking State Department sojourn of Vietnam with occasional collaborator Herbie Hancock.
Her master classes and workshops — from “Sound Sculpture” to the innovative “Babysong,” which teaches young mothers and healthcare providers the importance of the human voice for healing and nurturing — introduce and explore the wonders of song. She is married to the architect Philip Freelon and resides in Durham, NC.
