Jereann King Johnson

Jereann King Johnson slept under and pieced quilts as far back as she can remember. Her early discovery of and fondness for textiles and textures flourishes still. Her quilt-making is inspired by ethnic designs, works of art, nature, personal stories, history, as well as traditional quilt patterns. In collaboration with several North Carolina quilters, Johnson helped to launch the African American Quilt Circle in 1997 and the Heritage Quilters in 2001. For her, quilting is a dynamic metaphor for living, for community development, and for creative expression, a way of putting pieces, often time discarded pieces, together to make something new. Within the quilting tradition, there is a powerful impulse for freedom and creativity.
