Jeffrey Wasserstrom

Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor, History, at the University of California-Irvine. He is a specialist in modern Chinese history with a strong interest in connecting China’s past to its present and placing both into global perspective. Among his many publications are Student Protests in Twentieth-Century China: The View from Shanghai (Stanford, 1991), Global Shanghai, 1850-2010 (Routledge, 2009), (co-authored) China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford, latest edition 2018), and Eight Juxtapositions: China through Imperfect Analogies from Mark Twain to Manchukuo (Penguin, 2016). Aside from these works, he seeks to engage various public audiences through print and digital forums, including his former involvement with the Irvine-based group blog/electronic magazine, “The China Beat”; as a member of the editorial team fo the Los Angeles Review of Books’ China Channel; as editor of accessible books, such as Oxford Ilustrated History of Modern China (Oxford, 2016); and in public testimony, media appearances, adn advisory work with filmmakers. He is also the co-founder of UCI’s Forum for the Academy and the Public.
