J. Michael Miller is the Lead Historian, Marine Corps History Division, at the History Division and Gray Research Center, U.S. Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia. From 2005 to 2013, he was the Director of the Marine Corps Archives. He has taught at Penn State University, Marine Corps University, and the University of Mary Washington. He is the author of “Bayonets, Blood and Beyond, A Single Day of Combat for a Marine Rifle Company,” in Unknown Soldiers, The American Expeditionary Forces in Memory and Remembrance; My Dear Smedley, The Letters of John A. Lejeune and Smedley D. Butler; Echoes of Mercy, the Diaries of John H. Simpson, a Civil War Chaplain; From Shanghai to Corregidor, Marines in the Defense of the Philippines, 1997; “St. Mihiel Campaign 1918” in The United States in the First World War, An Encyclopedia; Even to Hell Itself, The North Anna River Campaign, May 1864; John H. Russell, Jr., 1872-1947: Register of his Personal Papers, and numerous articles on both on Marine Corps and Civil War History for national publications such as Leatherneck, Civil War Times Illustrated, Blue and Gray Magazine, and Gettysburg Magazine. He is currently working on a 3 volume definitive history of the Marine Corps in World War I era, 1900-1919.
